π§ Why Does Audio Distort on DaVinci Resolve Playback (But Goes Away After Timeline Reset)?
If youβve ever been working in DaVinci Resolve and encountered sudden, distorted audio during playback, you know how frustrating it can be. One moment, your audio is crisp, and the next, it sounds like it's coming through a tin can! Interestingly, the distortion often disappears after moving the playhead or resetting the timeline. π§ So, whatβs going on?

π Common Causes of Distorted Audio:
-
Buffering or Cache Issues π₯οΈ:
DaVinci Resolve relies heavily on your systemβs memory and cache for smooth playback. If the cache is full or the systemβs resources are limited, the audio might stutter or distort. -
Sample Rate Mismatch πΆ:
When the projectβs audio sample rate doesn't match the audio clipβs sample rate, you might experience distorted or choppy audio. Ensure that your clips match the project settings in the Fairlight tab. -
Heavy Effects or Color Grading π¨:
If youβre using resource-intensive effects or heavy color grading, this can put extra pressure on your CPU or GPU, leading to delayed or distorted audio playback. Pausing and restarting helps temporarily by allowing your system to catch up. -
CPU and Disk Performance βοΈ:
Slow or overworked processors can also affect real-time audio playback. In some cases, moving the timeline back gives your system a chance to refresh and eliminate the distortion.
π Solutions to Fix Distorted Audio:
-
Optimize Your Cache π§:
Go to Playback > Delete Render Cache and clear unnecessary files. You can also increase the cache allocation in the Preferences section. -
Match Audio Sample Rates ποΈ:
Ensure your projectβs audio sample rate matches the rate of your clips. You can adjust this under the Project Settings in the Fairlight tab. -
Use Optimized Media π:
Create optimized media for your clips to reduce the strain on your CPU and GPU. This often leads to smoother playback. -
Update Drivers and Hardware π»:
Ensure your system is up-to-date with the latest drivers, and consider upgrading your CPU or GPU if you frequently experience performance bottlenecks.
