How to Ensure Adequate Rest as a DevOps Contractor

Are you working in IT and struggling to make the best decisions? Do you find it challenging to get enough rest? The IT field can be overwhelming, and ensuring you have enough rest is critical for your overall well-being and productivity. Today, I'm going to share with you what I do to make sure I get enough rest as a DevOps contractor.

Understanding the Challenge

Working as a DevOps contractor, especially across multiple time zones, can be highly demanding. The need for physical and mental rest cannot be overstated. If you’re not well-rested, you’re likely to make poor decisions, which can affect both your mental and physical health. This isn’t just about work-life balance—it's about finding what works for you personally.

Tailoring Rest to Your Cognition

People have different ways of thinking and making decisions, which I categorize into four main types:

  1. Emotional Thinkers: Use their senses to make decisions.
  2. Rational Thinkers: Use logic to find the most efficient path.
  3. Problem-Oriented Thinkers: Focus on solving every problem they encounter.
  4. Solution-Oriented Thinkers: Aim to go from A to B in the most productive way.

I fall into the problem-oriented category, constantly introducing new challenges into my life. For someone like me, rest involves continuously balancing work and breaks.

Personalizing Rest

Everyone’s definition of rest varies. For me, rest can mean going to the spa, hitting the gym, or taking my family out. The key is to understand what rest means for you and make it a part of your routine. Here are some strategies I use:

Understanding Yourself

Spend time understanding how your mind and body work. This helps you tailor your rest activities to what you need. For example, watching a TV series might help me unwind, but it's also a way to gather new ideas and inspiration for my work.

Mixing Work and Play

As an irrational thinker, I mix various activities to keep myself engaged and rested. For example, while going to the gym, I might also take a shower there, have a meal, and ensure my kids are engaged in activities. This way, I bundle activities to maximize efficiency and rest.

Listening to Your Body

If you find it hard to debug a system or focus on a task, it might be a sign you need a break. Regularly checking in with yourself to see if you're physically and mentally okay is crucial.

Engaging in Multiple Resting Activities

Rest doesn't just mean sleep. It can be meditation, spending time with family, watching movies, playing poker, or even working out. For me, playing poker helps gauge my mental state—if I’m making poor decisions, I know I need more rest.

Monitoring and Adjusting

It's essential to continuously monitor your rest strategies and adjust them as needed. For instance, if I notice I'm not getting enough cardio or lifting weights, I adjust my routine. Similarly, if I’m too tired to watch a movie or play poker, I know it's time to change my rest approach.

Conclusion

Finding the right balance of rest is a personalized process. What works for one person may not work for another. Take the time to understand your cognition, your body’s signals, and your resting needs. Tailor your rest strategy to suit your life and work demands.

By doing so, you can ensure you bring your A-game to every task, make better decisions, and maintain a healthy mind and body. If you have any questions or want to share your experiences, feel free to connect with me on social media. Let's navigate this journey together.
